Since UNESCO adopted its Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003 there has been much debate within ICOMOS around the connections between Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and tangible heritage. How do we manage the relationship between ICH and its interaction with the physical heritage place? The values of ICH to different communities and groups, notably the Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) and rights of First Nations communities must also be incorporated into protections and understandings of place. This presentation outlined the content of a new ICOMOS International Charter on Intangible Cultural Heritage in relation to place. The presentation covered the history of this new Charter, how a Charter might help advance heritage practice, Australia ICOMOS’ role and some considerations looking forward.

The panel discussion on Intangible Cultural Heritage held at the conference was recorded and can be viewed via the link.
