Context Pty Ltd., 1996. Assessment of social significance (G1): former South Adelaide Creche, 15 Gouger Street Adelaide. Report to the Australian Heritage Commission.
Adelaide’s first purpose built creche had started to be demolished when the Australian Heritage Commission stepped in and asked Context to urgently assess its potential social significance. Our approach recognised that the creche was potentially significant to those with direct experience of the place and its services (e.g. founders, committee members, past parents, children, workers and their families). It may also hold symbolic meanings reflecting its role in the history of women, work and childcare in Adelaide, especially to organisations that represent these interests in a general or specific way – for example, associations associated with childcare provision, parents associations, unions, women’s history and social history organisations, feminist organisations etc. Given the urgency, fifteen interviews were completed within four days. Evidence from earlier heritage assessments was also considered, as was the ability of the surviving fabric to express its social or historical significance.
