Preston Market, built in 1969, is a much-loved place, serving the cultural and shopping needs of the diverse communities of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. With proposals for change at hand, the City of Darebin asked Context to assess its heritage values, building on a preliminary study in 2011 as part of a project on Victoria’s post 1940s migration heritage. Our 2017 study focused particularly on historical, social and architectural values, and included face-to-face and online engagement with market shoppers and traders to appreciate the community connections and social values. Recommendations included recognition of the cultural signifiance of Preston Market along with actions to protect the tangible and intangible attributes of the market and record and share people’s market stories.
