The assessment of social value of this former detention centre was commissioned to contribute to the development of a Conservation Plan by Godden Mackay Logan. The project involved talking to former detainees and staff, and people in the local community to understand the social significance of Mount Penang. This work has identified a range of features at Mount Penang which are important because of their social value. The Mount Penang Juvenile Justice Centre is now listed on the NSW Heritage Register and the area has been redeveloped as the ‘Mount Penang Parklands’ precinct.
