'The Womens' - Royal Women's Hospital Melbourne (c1970)

Melbourne Connect is a ‘purpose built innovation precinct’ located on the site of the Royal Women’s Hospital. Context researched the the history, significance and meanings of the hospital, helping build a portfolio of interpretation concepts. Context, with Way Back When, researched Aboriginal connections to this part of the city – the hospital itself and the wider cultural landscape, documenting contemporary and historical themes. This work was also designed to contribute to interpretation and place naming. Community engagement was a key part of the project. Aboriginal Traditional Owners, community organisations and individuals associated with the hospital and its role in women’s health were invited to participate.

The development has now been realised and has a dedicated website: https://melbconnect.com.au. The central space is an open-air oculus, named Womin-Djerring (Come Together), a central gathering space, with a series of laneways leading in, each graced with a name in Woiwurrung.
