Lake Condah Mission (in western Victoria) and the nearby Cemetery is a highly significant heritage place for its importance to the identity, living culture and history of the Gunditjmara Aboriginal community. It is also of considerable historical and social significance to all Victorians, and a significant cultural landscape. Preparing the Conservation Management Plan required a very close collaboration with the Aboriginal owners – then the Kerrup-Jmara Aboriginal Elders Aboriginal Corporation, now Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation. Recognition of the aspirations of the community for the Mission, management of the full range of heritage values and providing a range of extremely practical information to assist in the management of the place was the focus of our work. Through community involvement and the conservation and landscape planning skills of the study team, a comprehensive and readable Conservation Management Plan was produced. The project went beyond this output to develop a number of practical aids for the community, including stand-alone work instruction sheets for weed control and vegetation management, a simple easy-to-follow Action Plan to aid annual works planning. and a wall chart to illustrate the ‘vision’ of the Plan for community members.
