Melbourne’s Domain Parkland and Memorial Precinct has been permanently added to Australia’s National Heritage List. The area listed includes Alexandra Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens, ‘The Kings Domain’, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, the land between ‘The Kings Domain’ and St. Kilda Road, the parklands between the Yarra River and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and Alexandra Avenue, which was a part of the 1901 design of the area by engineer Carlo Catani. The Domain Parklands provide the setting for the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, the Shrine of Remembrance, Government House and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The CMP has updated historical research, assessed the many landscape and built features within the Domain including the substantial tree collection and the memorials.
The 2016 Conservation Management Plan includes updated historical research, assessment of many landscape and built features within the Domain including its substantial tree collection. Following discussions with major stakeholders, conservation issues were addressed and policies put forward for its future development and management.
