Context worked in collaboration with New Zealand architects DPA to create a new Conservation Plan for Canterbury Museum. Context’s role was to undertake an analysis of social and cultural values as defined in New Zealand legislation and conservation guidance. Through a public online survey, focus groups and interviews, Context prepared a comprehensive analysis of the social and cultural values of the museum.

Interestingly, the buildings and collection were often seen as an integrated whole, with values attributed to both elements together, reflecting the importance of the experience of place. Familiarity and continuity were also important expressions of the museums social and cultural values, reflecting the impact of the earthquakes on the built fabric of the city.
