Project with Southern Cross University to assess the qualities and values expressed by local people about the Alstonville Plateau. Community engagement was at the heart of the project. Two community workshops, facilitated by Chris, adapted the ‘community heritage workshop’ methods developed in the Regional Forest Agreement projects. SCU team members worked with the local high school on a photographic project. Students were asked to photography and assemble images of what they liked most about Alstonville Plateau, working in pairs or small groups. This work was based on a method Meredith Walker had trialed in a number of local heritage studies. The third elements was a community questionnaire designed to confirm, amend and/or reject community values identified through the community workshops and the photographic project. More than 100 questionnaires were completed. The project report concluded that the community engagement was a success, identifying potential heritage items across the Alstonville Plateau, and actively engaging the community in talking about heritage and what was important to them.
