This Conservation Management Plan was commissioned by the Maribyrnong City Council for the Footscray Town Hall and its associated heritage landscape, in their capacity as the owner and occupier of the building. The building and its landscaped setting, of 1936, have a high level of heritage significance both to the local community and the State of Victoria as a whole. In recognition of its importance, it has been inscribed on the Victorian Heritage Register as item H1218. The social significance of the Town Hall was presented in the CMP based on the role of the building within the locality and history of Footscray, and its recently diminished role. Direct engagement with local and other communities and cultural groups was not undertaken.
A large part of the project was a detailed condition assessment, and recommendations for both remedial repair and maintenance works, as well as possible restoration of altered elements – both built and landscape – in the future. [Source: Context Pty Ltd]
